Gingerbread Challenge

Tuesday December 4 at 3:00 PM
The Gingerbread Returns...

Create a Gingerbread Masterpiece at this returning event. This time, with a peppermint twist! Decorate your house according to our secret theme! Call the library at 330-343-6123 to Register. Registration is limited to 15 this year. BUT, participants are asked (encouraged, nay, BEGGED) to bring a bag of candy decorations to share and a can of white icing.

This was a lot of fun last year (and a lot of work, but we can overlook that). This year, we hope to improve upon it. The Challenge part was an idea from one of you, after all! (You can thank her at the event...) Light refreshments will be provided. Don't plan on eating your house... at least not at the library. At least let me get a picture of it finished and get it to your house first...

BRING A CAN OF WHITE ICING AND A BAG OF CANDY TO DECORATE WITH!

3. Do not include personal contact information, just your name.
4. I also ask that you be Kind to our YA Lounge Table and try to keep it tidy.

Craft Club!

Learn How to Knit!

Tuesday November 20th at 3:00 PM

A JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts Stores instructor will be here to teach us the basic knit stitch and how to make a knitted headband. (You can also call this teacher "Liz's Mom.")  Call the library at 330-343-6123 to register.

YOU NEED:
1. A Pair of Size 8 Knitting Needles
2. A Skein (aka package) of Yarn (Mom recommends Caron Simply Soft because it's "snuggly")

I think maybe you might not have heard that. I do not have knitting needles and yarn for you guys. You MUST bring your own. One more time: this time the library is not providing the materials. You need knitting needles and yarn to learn how to knit.

If you forget your stuff, you may stay and have a snack, but you must be quiet and allow the others to learn. If you are disruptive, you will be asked to leave. I give you fair warning.

PS: If you give us your phone number when you register, I will try to call everyone on Monday afternoon to remind you about the supplies.

(Can you tell I learned something from the Kool Aid Play Dough?)

What do full members get? Something awesome. And, yes, that's code for "Liz hasn't figured that part out yet" and also "Well, it won't matter unless you put something on the blog."

Chopped

Tuesday November 6 @ 3:00 PM

Back and more delicious than ever! Join us for this competition that will challenge your culinary skills, quick thinking, and creativity! Judging will be based on taste, presentation, and creative use of the secret ingredients. Call 330-343-6123 to register.

Teens will work in teams to create 3 dishes using 3 secret ingredients. (No, I can't tell you what they are. First of all, I haven't picked them yet. Secondly, then they wouldn't be secret.) The dishes have to be an appetizer, a main dish, and a desert. While none of the ingredients will absolutely require cooking, a microwave will be provided. A "pantry" will also be available to provide teens with extra ingredients.

Event is inspired by the hit Food Network television show and is open to teens grades 7-12.

After School Improv!

Tuesday October 30 at 3:00 PM

Join us in the Community Room to learn how to think on your feet, create skits, and play fun games. This new event is open to teens in grades 7-12. Bring all your friends and have some laughs. Refreshments provided. Call 330-343-6123 to Register!

What is improv?
Improv (AKA Improvisational Theater, but, really, that's way too long to say) is a form of performance art (AKA acting) where actors have no script (or simply go off script) to create something new. Often, improvised lines are pretty realistic, and improvisation is a great skill for actors to have.

But, wait, is this an acting class?
Oh, yeah, me teaching you to act... yeah, no. No, we're not going there. We're taking improv to an extreme. The comedy club, Whose Line is it Anyway, kind of extreme. There are many games and activities designed to create an improv comedy show. It's these that we'll be focusing on. You don't have to know how to act. You just have to let go and have some fun. Say whatever comes to mind, and go with it.

And if all else fails...
We'll always have popcorn...

Banned Books Week!

FREADOM

September 30 - October 6, 2012

Banned Books Week is a national movement that raises awareness about issues of censorship, book challenges, bans, and your freedom to read. Celebrated in libraries and bookstores, this is the week to enjoy your freedom to read "dangerous" books.

When we say "Banned" we mean a book that has been Removed from a library (somewhere), for any number of reasons. "Challenged" on the other hand, means the book has been questioned, but not necessarily removed, in a library. Most banned or challenged books are books for teens and children, questioned by parents for their content.

Here are the Top Banned Books of 2011:
  1. ttyl; ttfn; l8r, g8r (series), by Lauren Myracle
Reasons: offensive language; religious viewpoint; sexually explicit; unsuited to age group
  2. The Color of Earth (series), by Kim Dong Hwa
Reasons: nudity; sex education; sexually explicit; unsuited to age group
  3. The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins
Reasons: anti-ethnic; anti-family; insensitivity; offensive language; occult/satanic; violence
  4. My Mom's Having A Baby! A Kid's Month-by-Month Guide to Pregnancy, by Dori Hillestad Butler
Reasons: nudity; sex education; sexually explicit; unsuited to age group
  5. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie
Reasons: offensive language; racism; religious viewpoint; sexually explicit; unsuited to age group
  6. Alice (series), by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Reasons: nudity; offensive language; religious viewpoint
  7. Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
Reasons: insensitivity; nudity; racism; religious viewpoint; sexually explicit
  8. What My Mother Doesn't Know, by Sonya Sones
Reasons: nudity; offensive language; sexually explicit
  9. Gossip Girl (series), by Cecily Von Ziegesar
Reasons: drugs; offensive language; sexually explicit
  10. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
    Reasons: offensive language; racism

Other banned books you might know include: Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, Forever by Judy Blume, And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, and Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer.

They're not banned everywhere. They're not gone. You can choose to read them (or stay far away from them) for yourself. That's what Banned Books Week makes you aware of: your choice and freedom to read whatever you want and to decide for yourself what books are appropriate.

So, have a Happy Banned Books Week and celebrate your freedom to read!

Video games are rated T and under. Time limits on the XBox will be implemented. Please contact Teen Librarian Liz Strauss with any questions. Event is open to teens in grades 7-12.

We have an Original XBox (donated) and these games:

  1. Call of Duty: Finest Hour
  2. FORZA Motorsport
  3. Ghost Recon 2
  4. Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike
  5. NASCAR Chase for the Cup 2005
  6. Outlaw Golf
  7. Professional Drag Racing 2005
  8. Project Gotham Racing
  9. Project Gotham Racing 2
  10. Ralli Sport Challenge
  11. Ralli Sport Challenge 2
  12. Splinter Cell

If you have Original XBox games that are rated T or Under, you may bring them to the Game Day. We'll decide time limits the day of (depends on if any staff are on vacation/if I need to be anywhere). Two teens may play at a time (and I actually prefer it if you play as teams, so that more people can play in our limited time). You'll sign up for times when you arrive, and you will only be allowed one sign-up time, unless there is nobody else who wants to play.

If you have any board games you would like to bring, please feel free! If you have any suggestions for games, email me at strausel@oplin.org. I'm always looking for good board games! (But I seem to have struck out with Cranium Cadoo... Come on, guys, it's awesome!)

See you at Game Day!

Coming Soon

Look for these titles on the new shelf this fall:

Dodger by Terry Pratchett

"A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage, in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's ...Dodger."

Go to Goodreads Page. A new look at an old character. This should fit in really well with Scarlet and Bewitching.

The Diviners by Libba Bray

"Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. ...
When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first."

See more at Goodreads. And be prepared to fight me for this one. Libba Bray is always quite awesome, unique, and witty.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater

"For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore."

Read a lot more on Goodreads. Maggie Steifvater is the author of The Wolves of Mercy Falls series (Shiver, Linger, Forever.) Her book The Scorpio Races has also been nominated for the Teens' Top Ten list. (You can still vote for 2 whole days here.)

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

"Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare. . . . "

Goodreads again. Actually bouncing for this one. Annabeth and Percy are finally going to be reunited! Oh, and, yeah, that war should be interesting too.

Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay

"Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn't anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well..."

Final Goodreads link. I have to admit, this one has me intrigued. I would love to know what you think of it, because there is a sequel that I haven't ordered yet. Not sure if we were ready for such an odd retelling...

Look for these new titles in the Teen Zone soon!

A Very Late Update & Lock-In Photos

Teens at this summer's last event, the Own the Night Lock In, had a blast! We played games, we ran around like lunatics (or you all did and I watched and hoped you wouldn't break the other lamp...) we did random crafts and watched Mirror Mirror! Our scavenger hunt winners were actually the last to get finished (but the only ones to answer all the questions correctly.) Three people slept. Most everybody got addicted to a new game on Facebook during quiet hours, and I hope some new friends were made. All in all, I'd say it was a great way to finish the summer!

Next up, a really ambitious Fall. We're having a Teen Tuesday event EVERY WEEK from September 11 to December 18! EVERY TUESDAY at 3:00 PM, you can join us at the library for great events. And, hey, guess what? YOU helped plan them!

You love games? Yeah, I think you do, since that's where I see most of you. And, we do have an XBox... So, we've got Game Days! September 25 and November 27.

Who doesn't like to make things? The brand new TEEN Craft Club will meet October 23 and November 20. October 23, we'll make Kool-aid Play Dough. (You can bring your favorite kind of Kool-Aid, the unsweetened little packages) November 20, we'll be learning how to knit. (Size 8 knitting needles and small skein of Caron Simply Soft yarn.)

Also, the YA Crew is back the second Tuesday of every month. We'll be planning our first "Haunted Library" event. This event will be run by teen volunteers and library staff and will be for children ages 8-12. Volunteer and community service opportunities await those who join the YA Crew. These opportunities are great experience for job and college applications.

Have you been counting? That takes care of most of the events this fall. But also coming up are these great events:

  • Talk Like A Pirate Party
  • We're the Banned (Banned Books Week Event)
  • Brain Freeze
  • Chopped
  • Gingerbread Challenge
For the full calendar, see the above link. For more information, please call the library at 330-343-6123 and ask for Liz. For even more awesome updates, like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/doverpubliclibraryteens

EDIT: After-School Movies have been cancelled. Fear not! We will be having After-School Improv instead! October 30th and December 18th! Hang out with friends, enjoy
popcorn, and create unique, hilarious skits!

Glow Tees Tutorial

Thanks to everyone who came to our Glow Tees event! I think everyone had a lot of fun creating their t-shirts. For those of you who missed it, here are some pictures from the event:

Now that you've seen all the fun we had on Tuesday, here's how you can make your own Glow Tee at home!

Supplies Needed (or highly recommended):
Glow-in-the-Dark Puffy Paint (we used 12 pks purchased from Walmart)
Dark T-Shirt
Magazine/Cardboard
Paper Towels
Q-Tips
Chalk/White Marking Pencil

Directions:
1. Spread your T-shirt out on a flat surface, insert the magazine or piece of cardboard into the shirt and position it where your design will be. (This will keep the paint from soaking through the fabric and ruining your shirt.)
2. If desired, with the chalk or marking pencil, draw your design on the T-Shirt. (There is no undo button, kids.)
3. Carefully draw your design with the puffy paint. (Warning: this kind of paint likes to explode sometimes. I suggest doing a practice line on a paper towel or scrap of paper.) Squeeze gently and evenly. Use the Q-Tips to spread the paint thinner, if needed.
4. Make sure you wipe off the tip of the paint bottle when you are finished. This will help to prevent clogs later. (If you do get a clog, a pin or needle can be used to unclog it.)
5. Leave your shirt to dry overnight. When you wash it, turn the shirt inside out. Be careful when taking the shirt from the dryer, as this paint sometimes likes to melt and stick together. Gently pull it back apart, and it should be fine.

Design Ideas:
A Constellation
Zodiac Sybols
Night Scene
Fireworks
A Favorite Quote
Fan-Art

One More Tip:
We had to move our tees, but at home, don't move them until they're done drying! If you do have to move the shirt, and you know you have to move the shirt, maybe try to keep the design small and in the center. That might help. (I didn't realize at the time of the event... Hindsight is 20/20. Remember that, teens.)

Frankentoys

They're Alive...

Coming Soon

Here are some more books you'll see soon in the YA Area!

The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

"This dark and thrilling adventure, with an unforgettable heroine, will captivate fans of steampunk, fantasy, and romance." (Amazon) Me, I just like the title, and the fact that one of the main characters is a librarian!
(I've also ordered Supernaturally by Kiersten White, Soulbound by Heather Brewer, and Rapture by Lauren Kate)

Papercutz Slices 4: The Hunger Pains by Stefan Petrucha, Illustrated by Rick Parker
They've taken on Harry Potter and Twilight. Now they're attacking The Hunger Games. Get a laugh with this graphic novel adaptation of the Harvard Lampoon Spoof (also available in regular fiction)!
(For another laugh, check out F in Exams: The Very Best Totally Wrong Test Answers by Richard Benson)

Marathon by Boaz Yakin, Illustrated by Joe Infurnari
The story of the original Marathon runner! "In 490BC, an Athenian messenger named Eucles ran 153 miles from Sparta to Athens, and in so doing preserved ancient Greek civilization from subjugation to the Persian Empire. This is his story." (Amazon) Just in time for the Olympic Games!

Pandora Hearts 1 and 2 by Jun Mochizuki
Yay! Go me! I finally remembered to order these! Get started on this great Manga series suggested to us by a local teen (a couple of times, but I forget things.) If YOU have any ideas for books that we should have, just let me know!
(PS - We're also getting some Death Note, The Earl and the Fairy, and Black Butler)

DC Comics: The Ultimate Character Guide by Brandon T. Snider
Finally, some DC stuff for you guys! Marvel has been winning so far this summer, but soon, The Dark Knight Rises will hit theaters and then DC will get the spotlight. Who do you think would win: The Justice League or The Avengers? Get ready for the battle of the comics with this guide.
(Hmm, we're also getting X-Men: Dark Phoenix Saga. Marvel may still be winning this one.)

Legend by Marie Lu
Another in a long line of YA Dystopian novels (See The Hunger Games, Matched, Gone, and many others)! This is one that I actually *gasp* missed the first time around! Don't worry, someone told me about it, and now I even have the sequel on my list. Did I miss another one? Tell me and I'll see if I can't remedy that!
(We also have the Gone series because this same person recommended them. See, I listen!)
