YA Crew Meeting October

Tuesday October 8 at 3:00 PM

This month, the Crew will be talking about the Haunted Library event. This special event consists of a haunted maze inside the library followed by fun and games in the Community Room. Teens volunteers will be helping the library run this event for children ages 8-12. At the meeting, teens will help Liz plan the event and make some decorations. Teens can also sign up to volunteer at the event during the meeting, but they are not obligated to do so.

The Haunted Library will take place Saturday October 26 from 8-9 PM (Approximately 6-10 PM for Volunteers). Teens may work the whole thing or work in shifts. Teens are needed to hide in the maze, lead the maze, and run the games in the Community Room. Email Liz with any questions, ideas, or for more information.

Recycled Paper Jewelry - How To Links

In case you missed our fabulous event last Tuesday, here are some sites to help you make your own paper beads, bracelets, and rings at home!

We had cardboard templates for our beads, but Rookie has great instructions for paper beads from scratch here: http://rookiemag.com/2012/04/paperbeads-diy/

Here's another tutorial with how to make different shapes of beads (We used some of these templates on Tuesday): http://www.tappi.org/paperu/art_class/paperBeads.htm

Now for a bracelet tutorial (we used a different one, but this one has lots of pictures): http://fluffyland.com/blog/index.php/starburst-wrapper-bracelet-tutorial/

This braided paper bracelet is also a neat one to try: http://tallystreasury.com/2011/08/braided-paper-bracelets-and-bookmarks/

Moving on to the ring, this wasn't the one we used, but it was the only one I could find online: http://www.wikihow.com/Fold-a-Dollar-Bill-to-Make-a-Finger-Ring

Banned Books Week

September 22 - 28

It's that time of year again! Time to celebrate your freedom to read and decide for yourself what makes a good book. Celebrate with us by coming to the library and completing our Banned Books Week activities and entering to win our Banned Books Week Raffle! We have banned books to give away, so don't miss your opportunity to win!

Banned Books Week is a national movement that raises awareness about issues of censorship, book challenges, bans, and your freedom to read. Celebrated in libraries and bookstores, this is the week to enjoy your freedom to read "dangerous" books.

When we say "Banned" we mean a book that has been Removed from a library (somewhere), for any number of reasons. "Challenged" on the other hand, means the book has been questioned, but not necessarily removed, in a library.

Banned Books Week is of special significance to teens because many of the challenged books are considered classic YA titles. Check out ALA's Banned Books Week page for more information.

Some of you will remember the rings we made at the Marvel Party. (Or the rings I tried to get you to make at the Marvel Party). This event will take that idea to a whole new level.
