3rd Annual Chopped Competition

Tuesday November 5 at 3:00 PM

Teens will compete in teams to create the tastiest dishes out of three secret ingredients. This event is inspired by the hit Food Network game show. Open to teens in grades 6-12. Call the library at 330-343-6123 to register for this randomly delicious event. When registering, please let the library know of any food allergies.

There will be three secret ingredients announced at the beginning of the competition. Teens will then create an appetizer, a main dish, and a dessert using at least one secret ingredient each and all three ingredients at least once.  Past secret ingredients have included: ramen noodles, Hershey kisses, and tortillas. Other ingredients, such as spices and limited produce, will be available in a "pantry" to help teens create something delicious. Teens will have an hour to cook. Judging will be based on taste, presentation, and creativity.

Story Starters

Tuesday October 29 at 3:00 PM

Kick-start your fanfiction, short stories, poetry, and more at this creative program! Join in our writing exercises and play fun word games. Enter to win a door prize, enjoy snacks, and meet other young writers. Event is open to teens in grades 6-12. Call the library at 330-343-6123 to register.

This event serves as a launch party of sorts for NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. Participants set a word goal (usually 50,000 words) to accomplish during the month of November. The website allows participants to track progress and meet up with other writers. There is even a special Young Writers Program for kids and teens! This fall, challenge yourself to write that story you've always wanted to write! And if procrastination gets you down, try out Write or Die by Dr. Wicked. This writing app "puts the prod in productivity," by helping writers set and meet their goals daily.

Skype with Laura Bickle

Tuesday October 15 at 3:00 PM

Video chat with teen and adult author Laura Bickle! We'll be talking about the writing process as well as Laura's Hallowed Ones series. These teen books feature Katie, an Amish girl who lets a stranger into her protected community while a mysterious epidemic destroys the outside world. This special event is open to teens and adults. Snacks provided. Please call the library at 330-343-6123 to register.

A little more about The Hallowed Ones, the first book of the series:

Katie and her friend Elijah are looking forward to their Rumspringa, their chance to experience the outside world for themselves before being baptized, when the world ends. In their sheltered Amish community, Katie and Elijah don’t know exactly what happened, but, from what they can gather, an epidemic has caused mass insanity and destruction Outside. Without knowing why the Amish have been spared, the Elders decide that no one will be allowed to enter or leave their safe community. When Katie finds an injured outsider, she struggles with the idea that letting him die is God’s will, as the Elders claim. Her conscience leads her to help the stranger, a young man named Alex, and keep him hidden while he heals. Little does she know, her home is not as safe as the Elders would have her believe.

This enthralling page-turner features a very strong, independent female character and a refreshing twist on the apocalypse genre. Details of Amish culture and elements of classic horror are also melded together wonderfully. For older teens looking for a good scare this Halloween season, this book is the perfect fit.

Laura Bickle is also the author of the Anya Kalinczyk series for adults. The Hallowed Ones series continues this fall with THE OUTSIDE (HMH Books for Young Readers, 2013). This is her first young adult series. Laura also has a background in criminal justice and library science. She lives in Ohio.
